Typically, this is when students experience an increased understanding of concepts and ideas, as well as of consequences of their own actions. Middle schoolers have growth spurts (and the physical awkwardness that comes with it), and this group often faces the challenges of increased peer pressure. The emotional, physical, and social aspects of development are all important during this time.
