Saturday Rehearsal and Parent Meeting

We will be holding our next band rehearsal on Saturday, September 15. Once again, all of our Saturday rehearsals are from 8:15 - 9:45 in the band room (Concert Winds) or the new Fine Arts Classroom (Cadet Band) at FVL. We hope that all of our students are able to participate in our Saturday group rehearsals. Even if a student cannot attend every rehearsal, we still welcome them when they are able to attend.

We will also be holding our FVL Schools Band Parent meeting this Saturday.  The meeting will begin at 8:30 and will conclude before the end of rehearsal at 9:45. We will discuss the fall fundraiser with a representative from Hansen's Fundraising, preview the schedule for the year, and will view the band's website and the information that it provides. We will also give you an idea of what volunteer opportunities you will have this year as an FVL Schools Band Parent!

The parent meeting will take place in the FVL Choir Room.

Volunteer Needs

We are looking for a few parents to offer their time as Volunteers and as Coordinators. An overall Volunteer Coordinator would be very helpful!

Here is a summary of positions we would like to fill:

Attendance - Parents to assist with checking in students as they arrive for rehearsals and concerts.  We would ask that you arrive a little before 8:00 for this duty.  Once the students are checked in (by 8:30) your duty is over!  We have an Attendance Volunteer sign up form available.  Go to the form to see which dates are open.  We would like one or two parents for each rehearsal date to handle the check in.

Fundraiser - This duty would begin on Saturday, September 15 and conclude within a week or two after our drive ends on November 3.  We need a parent or two (or three!) who could work together with Mr. Neujahr to assist with record-keeping, answer parent questions, and send messages as needed.  Assistance is also needed on October 6 when the money/packets are returned and again on November 3 to help set up and hand out the products.

Uniforms - Two or three parents are needed for each band (Cadet Band and Concert Winds) on an upcoming Saturday to help fit the band members with their vests.  Parents are also needed on Concert days to assist with handing out the vests and receiving them back again once the concert is over.

Gretchen Adrian will speak about these opportunities at the parent meeting.  We will have a few sign up sheets at the meeting for any who would like to volunteer for these important tasks.

Upcoming FVL Schools Band rehearsal schedule

Rehearsals leading up to our November concert will be on the following Saturdays:

September 15, 22
October 6, 13, 20
November 3, 10, 17
November 18 - Fall Concert (2:00 PM - concert includes the FVL Symphonic Band)
Please note - this is a Packers BYE week!

FVL Schools Fall Fundraiser Kick Off this Saturday!

Our Fall Fundraiser will be starting on September 15.  Students will receive their packets at the rehearsal that day.  If students are not in attendance at the rehearsal, they will receive their packets at their lesson the following week.

AGAIN THIS YEAR - Hansen's has online ordering!  This will make it much easier to let your friends and relatives know about our fundraiser.  You will have the ability to forward a text with a personalized link that your customers will use to purchase and you will get the credit for the sales.  Online ordering wil also allow those out of the area to support our program by paying the applicable shipping fee and have it shipped directly to their door. Being able to use a credit card will appeal to many people and will require less cash/money coming to us in our student packets.

NEW THIS YEAR - Hansen Foods now has a myFundR App that can be downloaded from either the Apple Store or the Google Play Store!

This fundraiser is also a great way to reduce your FVL Schools Band fees for the year.  20% of the funds you raise will go to the FVL Schools Band Program to help fund needed materials such as music and instruments, and 20% of the funds you raise will go directly to your individual accounts!  The other 60% is the cost of the fundraiser and goes back to Hansen's.

You can learn more about Hansen's at their website at Hansenfoods.com.

MUCH MORE INFORMATION will be distributed with the packets on September 15.  The Hansen's representative will be meeting briefly with the students in the Band Room and Fine Arts Room.  She will also be presenting the information at the parent meeting.

ONLINE ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS - This file will also be in the packets.  This document has instructions for registering online, App instructions, as well as the School ID that you will need to register.

PAPER ORDER FORM INSTRUCTIONS - This file will also be in the packets.  This document has instructions for how to fill out the form correctly (There is a sample order on each form to help clarify).

IMPORTANT INFO FOR FILLING OUT THE PAPER FORMS - The top three lines of the paper forms need to be filled out properly.  Please follow these instructions for filling out the top of the form:

WELS Middle School Honors Band

This past February many of the Wisconsin WELS grade school band programs participated in the first ever WELS Middle School Honors Band Festival. We are happy to announce that we will again be having that Honors Band festival.  To avoid the many solo and ensembles in the month of February and March, the directors have set the date for this year's festival for Saturday, December 1.

We will be nominating our most advanced students for this festival.  You and your child will be contacted if he/she is nominated, and will also be receiving more information in the near future.

As it was last year, this year's Honors Festival will take place at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School.

Update for September 6

Thursday, September 6, 2018

Your FVL Schools Band Directors are very excited for the lessons and rehearsals to begin, and look forward to a year of rehearsing and performing beautiful music! More important than the music we make will be the opportunity to use our God-given gifts to their fullest potential, while at the same time enjoying the benefits of belonging to such a wonderful musical family.

First Rehearsals

We will be holding our first band rehearsal on Saturday, September 8. This rehearsal will be for the CONCERT WINDS only (students with at least one year of experience). The CADET BAND (beginning band students) will have their first rehearsal on Saturday, September 15. All of our Saturday rehearsals are from 8:15 - 9:45 in the Band Room (Concert Winds) or new Fine Arts Classroom (Cadet Band) at FVL. We hope that all of our students are able to participate in our Saturday group rehearsals. Even if a student cannot attend every rehearsal, we still welcome them when they are able to attend.

Lessons begin week of September 10-14

We will be starting the individual band lessons at each school the week of September 10-14. A link to the lesson schedule can be found on the FVL Schools Band website in the Calendar tab and also under the Registration/Documents tab. Your school principals are working on the individual lesson times at each school, so there may be some tweaking of the times at each school to accommodate school schedules or additional registrations.

If you are renting an instrument from FVL and do not yet have the instrument, we will hand out the instruments on September 8 or Mr. Kramer or I will deliver that instrument on the first day of lessons at your school. Please be sure that your band student remembers to bring to school his/her instrument and lesson book for their first lesson. New students will be given their lesson books at their first lesson or at the Saturday rehearsal.

FVL Schools Band Parent Meeting on September 15

We will be having an FVL Schools Band Parent meeting on Saturday, September 15. The meeting will begin at 8:30 and will conclude by the end of the rehearsal at 9:45. We will discuss the fall fundraiser with a representative from Hansen's Fundraising, preview the schedule for the year, and will view the band's website and the information that it provides. We will also give you an idea of what volunteer opportunities you will have this year as an FVL Schools Band Parent!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY #1

Gretchen Adrian has again agreed to be our Attendance Coordinator! Thanks so much for your leadership in this area, Gretchen! She has put together an attendance "Practice Check-in" sign up sheet on Sign Up Genius. Each week we need one or two parents to check in students as they arrive at rehearsal. The duty begins a bit before 8:00 AM as students arrive, and is usually completed by about 8:30 after rehearsals begin. This task is important each week for our attendance records. If you are interested in helping out, please check the Practice Check In link for more information, as well as the form to sign up.

This form can also be found on our Volunteers page.

The Director's Updates - Important Information!

You will also begin to receive occasional email alerting you to a new "Director's Update" on our website. Normally you will receive an update on the Friday (or earlier in the week) preceding our Saturday rehearsals. The email will give you the topics covered in the update, and will direct you to that page for the full information.

We are very excited to begin this new year with the FVL Schools Band Program!

Registrations are OPEN for the 2018-19 FVL Schools Band

Friday, August 24, 2018

This post is to let you know that the registration for the 2018-2019 FVL Schools Band Program is open. Many families have registered already! Remember that the online sign up for the recently completed FVL Schools Beginner Band Camp is not the same as this registration form for the FVL Schools Band Program.

We would like all students to be registered by August 31 so that we can prepare our school lesson schedules. Lessons will begin at our schools the week of September 10. The first Saturday rehearsal will be September 8 - Concert Winds only. The beginners (Cadet Band) will not have rehearsal on that day. but will have their first Saturday rehearsal on September 15. You can access the FVL Schools Band rehearsal calendar on our website and clicking on the "Calendars" tab.

To register for the 2018-2019 school year, simply go to the  "Registration/Documents" tab. You will see more information and a link to our registration form. You will be taken to a form for registering. Follow the instructions as given. There is also a link to the " FVL Schools Band 2018-2019 Explanation of Fees". This PDF will give you an idea before registering what our fees are. When viewing the PDF, most of our students will be either Option 1 or Option 2.

New this year - our FVL Schools Band registrations will be completed through LeagueApps, which is the same site used for all of our FVL grade school athletic camps. So if you have registered your children for one of these camps, you will not need to enter your personal information again. You will simply add the information for the FVL Schools Band Program by logging into your account. If anyone has any questions about this new procedure, you can email me at jneujahr@fvlhs.org or contact Krista Davis in our business office at kdavis@fvlhs.org.

2018 FVL Schools Band Awards

Last week at our Awards program, several students were the recipients of our Outstanding Attendance Award. These students truly deserved the award, as they attended every single practice, or missed just one.  That is an amazing feat, considering that we met on eighteen Saturdays throughout the year, and performed in three concerts!  Many of these students also performed for the Solo and Ensemble Festival, which added another Saturday, and also participated in the WELS Middle School Honor Festival on another Saturday!  Most of our band students are also involved in soccer, volleyball, basketball, cheer, and countless other activities.  We certainly appreciate their dedication to our FVL Schools Band Program, and thank the parents for helping them to achieve this award!

Anthony Higareda, Clarinet, Riverview Appleton

Beginning Band Open House

The Beginning Band Open House is an event where new and interested students can try out various instruments.   If students and parents cannot attend our Open House event, they are still able to join the FVL Schools Band Program next fall.  We will have many instruments set up for trial, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion kit.  Having all of these instruments on hand for students to try out will help them determine what instrument they would like to play.  It is a fun and exciting night for new students, as well as the parents!  Yes, it does get a little loud with all of the "music" being played, but seeing the smiles on the faces of the students and parents makes it all worth the effort!

We will have information concerning renting instruments from Heid Music, and possibly a representative from Heid's as well to answer any questions you may have.

This year we will be hosting one Beginning Band Open House event.  The time and location is as follows:

Thursday, May 17 - 6:00 - 7:30 PM
FVL Commons
5300 N Meade Street
Appleton, WI 54913

As it is an "Open House", parents and students can come any time that evening, and don't need to plan to stay for the entire hour and a half.

If parents and students cannot make our Open House event, please contact James Neujahr at jneujahr@fvlhs.org and he can assist you with any questions you may have.

Thanks Miss Detjen and Mr. Nolte!

The FVL Schools Band Program sends a special Thank You to Miss Julie Detjen, the FVL Cross and Crown yearbook Editor, for taking these wonderful photos at our Spring Concert!  Below you will find just a few of the photos taken, including the "staged" photo from the stage, the group photos taken in the Commons after the concert, as well as some "action shots" of each band performing in concert.

Thanks also to all of our FVL Schools Band Members for their efforts at the 2018 Spring Concert!  Both bands performed exceptionally well, and can now close out our year on a magnificent "High Note"!

Thanks also to Mr. Nathan Nolte for livestreaming the concert and archiving it on the FVL YouTube channel!  You can go to the link to view the concert.  You can also send the link to relatives and friends who may not have been able to join us at the concert.

Update for April 21

Thursday, April 19, 2018

Thanks be to God for our FVL Schools Band Program!

We have arrived at the last week of the Cadet Band and Concert Winds rehearsal and performance schedule!  We thank our gracious God for His blessings on our program!  Without His guidance our efforts would be in vain.  We also thank Him for our wonderful parents and volunteers who help in countless ways to ensure the success of our young musicians.  We thank Him for the directors of our program and their professionalism and the joy for music that that they share with the bands. We thank Him for the many principals and teachers at our member schools, for helping to promote band and make it possible to give lessons during the school day. Last, but certainly not least, we thank God for the many students who make up our FVL Schools Band Program!  Their endless source of energy and enthusiasm is a constant pick-me-up for all of us who work with them week in and week out.

I also want to thank our band members for their efforts in lessons this year!  I am amazed every week with the progress our students are making in their lesson books, but more importantly to see how they are growing as musicians.  Playing an instrument is an activity that begins somewhat slowly for most students, but as they start to "get it"; it becomes increasingly more enjoyable as a player when they begin to produce really excellent music.  It is also an activity that they can enjoy for many years to come, as they enter high school, college, and beyond.  This year we have had MANY of our students playing in church, school chapel services, and accompanying choirs.  What a joy for us directors to see the musical gifts of our students being put to such good use!  As parents, your encouragement of your young musicians is crucial to their growth and advancement.

Music is one of the few activities that can be enjoyed for a lifetime, both as a participant and as a spectator.  It is a passion that touches the emotional, physical, and intellectual senses.  As Martin Luther so beautifully stated, "Music makes people kinder, gentler, more staid and reasonable. I am strongly persuaded that after theology there is no art that can be placed on a level with music; for besides theology music is the only art capable of affording peace and joy of the heart."

This is also a good time to encourage band members and parents to continue with band for next year, whether it is in the FVL Schools Band Program or in high school! You have all invested a good amount of time and money in instrumental music.  Being a part of the FVL Schools Band Program is a great educational experience and a FUN activity.  All of that is magnified in a high school band program!

Final Weekend of Rehearsals and Performances!

We have arrived at the end of our 2017-2018 FVL Schools Band year!  How exciting to think of where we were last September, and where we are now.  It is always great to see the growth in our student musicians, most notably the Cadet Band and their advancement.  It really has been a very good year.  We thank the Lord for his continued blessings on our FVL Schools Band Program!

April 21 - Final rehearsal followed by Band Awards
Jazz Class will follow the Awards for those who can stay (30 - 45 minutes)

Sunday, April 22 - FVL Schools Band Concert, 6:00 PM (Cadet Band and Concert Winds)

Following our final rehearsal on Saturday, April 21, we will be handing out various awards, including medals for students who completed books since Musicfest, WSMA Solo Medals, Attendance Awards, and the Director's Awards (2).  Our awards will be presented in the FVL Auditorium.  We would like all band students and parents to be in attendance if at all possible. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins (and other siblings) are also welcome!

Sunday, April 22 - FVL Schools Spring Band Concert Information
The concert begins at 6:00 PM in the FVL Auditorium.
  • Band members should arrive by 5:00 PM (Concert Black and White clothing), so we can hand out Concert Vests and Ties prior to warm up.  Cadet Band and Concert Winds will report to their regular rehearsal rooms at that time.

  • Students who were awarded medals for the Solo Festival are also encouraged to wear them for the concert.

Band Lessons and FVL instruments

Even with the recent blizzard cancellations, both Mr. Kramer and Mr. Neujahr have reached the minimum of 24 lessons at every school.  Some schools have even received 25 or 26 lessons.  So there will not be any more lessons this school year.

Because of that, all music and FVL-owned instruments will be collected following the concert on Sunday night.

Mr. Kramer is checking with his schools to see if there is an opportunity for the band students to play in a school chapel. If that can be arranged, his students may be keeping their instruments for a few additonal weeks.  We will know by concert time if this will happen.

FVL-owned instruments are sent to Heid Music every spring for annual repair and maintenance. Students who will be renting them from us next year will, in most cases, be given the same instrument next year.  Students who are taking summer lessons or attending music camps will be issued an instrument after they are returned from Heid Music.  If you will need an instrument for the summer, please contact James Neujahr.

Update for April 14

Friday, April 13, 2018

Due to Impending Ice/Snow/Rain/Wind - Rehearsal for April 14 will be Canceled

Mr. Kramer and I have discussed the possibilities for April 14, and I also discussed this with the FVL Administration.  No decision is easy, but we feel this is the right one.  Friday night will see significant rain, which overnight will turn to ice.  The forcast calls for ice accumulations on roads, trees, and power lines, as well as wind gusts up to 50 MPH.

So rather than have you worry tonight wondering if there will be band or not, we will call off today.

So we are now down to ONE rehearsal remaining, awards, and our Spring Concert.  Here is a summary of our remaining dates for 2017:

April 14 - Regular rehearsal - CANCELED
April 21 - Final rehearsal and Band Awards
April 22 - FVL Schools Spring Band Concert (6:00 PM)

Final Rehearsal and Band Awards

Following our final rehearsal on Saturday, April 21, we will be handing out various awards, including medals for students who completed books since Musicfest, WSMA Solo Medals, Attendance Awards, and the Director's Awards (2).  Our awards will be presented in the FVL Auditorium.  We would like all band students and parents to be in attendance if at all possible. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins (and other siblings) are also welcome!

Sunday, April 22 - FVL Schools Spring Band Concert
The concert begins at 6:00 PM in the FVL Auditorium.
  • Band members should arrive by 5:00 PM (Concert Black and White clothing), so we can hand out Concert Vests and Ties prior to warm up.  Cadet Band and Concert Winds will report to their regular rehearsal rooms at that time.
  • The students are encouraged to wear their medals for completing books to the concert!  It adds a special touch to the band uniform, and is a visible acknowledgement of a job well-done!
  • Students who were awarded medals for the Solo Festival are also encouraged to wear them for the concert.
Band Group Pictures

Some parents have been wondering about the band group and individual photos.  We decided after last year to discontinue using the professional photographer during a rehearsal day to take these photos.  Over the past several years the number of photo packages purchased averaged between 5 and 8 total packages.  So rather than take up more of our already limited rehearsal time, we discussed other options.

Our plan is to have an FVL Photographer take a group photo of each band immediately following the concert.  We will stage the photos in the Commons.  The FVL Photographer will take the "official" photographs first, after which we will give about a minute for parents to get a nice group shot if they wish.  Following your child's group photo, parents are welcome to take individual photos of band students in their uniform.

Schools may also want to use the time following the group photos to take a photo of your schools' band students.  These photos would be excellent additions to your school yearbook or school website!  Parents may wish to check with their school principal or yearbook advisor to see how best your school may use these photos to promote the FVL Schools Band Program.

FVL Schools Jazz Academy Reminder

Mr. Kramer is again offering several weeks of the FVL Schools Jazz Academy!  All students with at least one full year of lessons are eligible.

Rehearsals will be on the following days:

Saturdays March 3, 10, April 7, 14 (10:00 - 11:00 AM)
Mondays May 7, 14 (6:00 - 7:00 PM)

If your son/daughter is still interested, please contact Mr. Kramer.

Many Thanks to Our Crew of Attendance Takers!

Thanks to Gretchen Adrian for putting together the online sign up, as well as our many parents who have volunteered their time to help take attendance.  Your help is GREATLY appreciated!

We could still use one volunteer for each of our last three rehearsal dates - April 7, 14, and 21.  We do have one signed up for each date, but the task is made much easier with two manning the table.  You can go to our Volunteer Page for information and the Volunteer Sign Up link to add yourself to the schedule.

Summer Band Camp Opportunities

Many of our students have participated in the WELS Summer Band Camp in Milwaukee.  Although the deadline for the deposit was March 31, you may still be able to register.  All students received a camp brochure in January.  For more information and a link to the WELS Summer Band Camp website, check our Update for January 20.

UW-Green Bay also has a wonderful summer camp.  We just received information for the camp yesterday in the mail.  Their Middle School Music Camp is July 8 - 13.  Go to the link for the UW-GB Camp Brochure or visit their Summer Camp Website for more information.
