Saturday Rehearsal and Parent Meeting

We will be holding our next band rehearsal on Saturday, September 14. Once again, all of our Saturday rehearsals are from 8:15 - 9:45 in the band room (Concert Winds) or the Fine Arts Classroom (Cadet Band) at FVL. We hope that all of our students are able to participate in our Saturday group rehearsals. Even if a student cannot attend every rehearsal, we still welcome them when they are able to attend.

We will also be holding our FVL Schools Band Parent meeting this Saturday.  The meeting will begin at 8:30 and will conclude before the end of rehearsal at 9:45. We will discuss the fall fundraiser with a representative from Hansen's Fundraising, preview the schedule for the year, and will view the band's website and the information that it provides. We will also give you an idea of what volunteer opportunities you will have this year as an FVL Schools Band Parent!

The parent meeting will take place in the FVL Choir Room.

Updated School Lesson Schedule

There were a few edits to the Lesson Schedule.  Please check the schedule to double check which day lessons will be given at your child's school.  This new schedule is also linked on our Calendars and Schedules page.

Volunteer Needs - You can also check our Volunteer Page

We are looking for a few parents to offer their time as Volunteers and as Coordinators. An overall Volunteer Coordinator would be very helpful!

Here is a summary of positions we would like to fill:

Attendance - Parents to assist with checking in students as they arrive for rehearsals and concerts.  We would ask that you arrive by about 7:50 for this duty.  Once the students are checked in (by 8:30) your duty is over!  We have an Attendance Volunteer sign up form available.  Go to the form to see which dates are open.  We would like one or two parents for each rehearsal date to handle the check in.

Fundraiser - This duty would begin on Saturday, September 14 and conclude within a week or two after our drive ends on November 2.  We need a parent or two (or three!) who could work together with Mr. Neujahr to assist with record-keeping, answer parent questions, and send messages as needed.  Assistance is also needed on October 5 when the money/packets are returned and again on November 2 to help set up and hand out the products.

Uniforms - Two or three parents are needed for each band (Cadet Band and Concert Winds) on Saturday, October 12 to fit the band members with their vests.  Parents are also needed on Concert days to assist with handing out the vests and receiving them back again once the concert is over.

Upcoming FVL Schools Band rehearsal schedule

Rehearsals leading up to our November concert will be on the following Saturdays:

September 14, 21
October 5, 12 (Concert Vest Fittings during rehearsal), 19
November 2, 9, 23
November 24 - Fall Concert (2:00 PM - concert includes the FVL Symphonic Band)
Please note - the Packers play at San Francisco that day with a 3:25 Kickoff!

FVL Schools Fall Fundraiser Kicks Off this Saturday!

Our Fall Fundraiser will be starting on September 14.  Students will receive their packets at the rehearsal that day.  If students are not in attendance at the rehearsal, they will receive their packets at their lesson the following week.

AGAIN THIS YEAR - Hansen's has online ordering!  This will make it much easier to let your friends and relatives know about our fundraiser.  You will have the ability to forward a text with a personalized link that your customers will use to purchase and you will get the credit for the sales.  Online ordering wil also allow those out of the area to support our program by paying the applicable shipping fee and have it shipped directly to their door. Being able to use a credit card will appeal to many people and will require less cash/money coming to us in our student packets.

Hansen Foods also has a myFundR App that can be downloaded from either the Apple Store or the Google Play Store!  More information will be in the packets.

This fundraiser is also a great way to reduce your FVL Schools Band fees for the year.  20% of the funds you raise will go to the FVL Schools Band Program to help fund needed materials such as music and instruments, and 20% of the funds you raise will go directly to your individual accounts!  The other 60% is the cost of the fundraiser and goes back to Hansen's.

You can learn more about Hansen's at their website at Hansenfoods.com.

MUCH MORE INFORMATION will be distributed with the packets on September 14.  The Hansen's representative will be meeting briefly with the students in the Band Room and Fine Arts Room.  She will also be presenting the information at the parent meeting.

ONLINE ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS - This file will also be in the packets.  This document has instructions for registering online, App instructions, as well as the School ID that you will need to register.

PAPER ORDER FORM INSTRUCTIONS - This file will also be in the packets.  This document has instructions for how to fill out the form correctly (There is a sample order on each form to help clarify).

IMPORTANT INFO FOR FILLING OUT THE PAPER FORMS - The top three lines of the paper forms need to be filled out properly.  Please follow these instructions for filling out the top of the form:

September 3 Update

Tuesday, September 3, 2019

Your FVL Schools Band Directors are very excited for the lessons and rehearsals to begin, and look forward to a year of rehearsing and performing beautiful music! More important than the music we make will be the opportunity to use our God-given gifts to their fullest potential, while at the same time enjoying the benefits of belonging to such a wonderful musical family.

First Rehearsals

We will be holding our first band rehearsal on Saturday, September 7. This rehearsal will be for the CONCERT WINDS only (students with at least one year of experience). The CADET BAND (beginning band students) will have their first rehearsal on Saturday, September 14. All of our Saturday rehearsals are from 8:15 - 9:45 in the Band Room (Concert Winds) or new Fine Arts Classroom (Cadet Band) at FVL. We hope that all of our students are able to participate in our Saturday group rehearsals. Even if a student cannot attend every rehearsal, we still welcome them when they are able to attend.

Lessons begin week of September 9-13

We will be starting the individual band lessons at each school the week of September 9-13. A link to the lesson schedule can be found on the FVL Schools Band website in the Calendar tab and also under the Registration/Documents tab. Your school principals are working on the individual lesson times at each school, so there may be some tweaking of the times at each school to accommodate school schedules or additional registrations.

If you are renting an instrument from FVL and do not yet have the instrument, we will hand out the instruments on September 7 or Mr. Kramer or I will deliver that instrument on the first day of lessons at your school. Please be sure that your band student remembers to bring to school his/her instrument and lesson book for their first lesson. New students will be given their lesson books at their first lesson or at the Saturday rehearsal.

FVL Schools Band Parent Meeting on September 14

We will be having an FVL Schools Band Parent meeting on Saturday, September 14. The meeting will begin at 8:30 and will conclude by the end of the rehearsal at 9:45. We will discuss the fall fundraiser with a representative from Hansen's Fundraising, preview the schedule for the year, and will view the band's website and the information that it provides. We will also give you an idea of what volunteer opportunities you will have this year as an FVL Schools Band Parent!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY #1

We are in need of one or two Attendance Taker Volunteers each Saturday at the beginning of rehearsal. We have an "FVL Schools Band Attendance Check In" sign up sheet on Sign Up Genius. Each week we need one or two parents to check in students as they arrive at rehearsal. The duty begins a bit before 8:00 AM as students arrive, and is usually completed by about 8:30 after rehearsals begin. This task is important each week for our attendance records. If you are interested in helping out, please check the Attendance Check In link for more information, as well as the form to sign up.

This form can also be found on our Volunteers page.

The Director's Updates - Important Information!

You will also begin to receive occasional email alerting you to a new "Director's Update" on our website. Normally you will receive an update on the Friday (or earlier in the week) preceding our Saturday rehearsals. The email will give you the topics covered in the update, and will direct you to that page for the full information.

We are very excited to begin this new year with the FVL Schools Band Program!

FVL Schools Band Recruitment Visits

Friday, May 3, 2019

FVL Band Students look forward to Recruitment Activities!

Members of the FVL Band, as well as Mr. Neujahr, will be visiting many of our FVL Schools during the week of May 6 - 10.  Each day will feature a different ensemble performing for the grade school students.  These visits are always very exciting for the band members, as well as the FVL Schools students!  Our focus group is the 4th and 5th grade classes at each of our schools, as well as any other interested 6th and 7th graders.  Hopefully many of these young students will be inspired to give our FVL Schools Band Program a try for the following school year!

Beginning Band Open House

The Beginning Band Open House is an event where new and interested students can try out various instruments.   If students and parents cannot attend our Open House event, they are still able to join the FVL Schools Band Program next fall.  We will have many instruments set up for trial, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion kit.  Having all of these instruments on hand for students to try out will help them determine what instrument they would like to play.  It is a fun and exciting night for new students, as well as the parents!  Yes, it does get a little loud with all of the "music" being played, but seeing the smiles on the faces of the students and parents makes it all worth the effort!

We will have information concerning renting instruments from Heid Music, and possibly a representative from Heid's as well to answer any questions you may have.

This year we will be hosting one Beginning Band Open House event.  The time and location is as follows:

Thursday, May 16 - 6:00 - 7:30 PM
FVL Commons
5300 N Meade Street
Appleton, WI 54913

As it is an "Open House", parents and students can come any time that evening, and don't need to plan to stay for the entire hour and a half.

If parents and students cannot make our Open House event, please contact James Neujahr at jneujahr@fvlhs.org and he can assist you with any questions you may have.

April 17 Update

Wednesday, April 17, 2019

Thanks be to God for our FVL Schools Band Program!

We thank our gracious God for His blessings on our program!  Without His guidance our efforts would be in vain.  We also thank Him for our wonderful parents and volunteers who help in countless ways to ensure the success of our young musicians.  We thank Him for the directors of our program and their professionalism and the joy for music that that they share with the bands. We thank Him for the many principals and teachers at our member schools, for helping to promote band and make it possible to give lessons during the school day. Last, but certainly not least, we thank God for the many students who make up our FVL Schools Band Program!  Their endless source of energy and enthusiasm is a constant pick-me-up for all of us who work with them week in and week out.

I also want to thank our band members for their efforts in lessons this year!  I am amazed every week with the progress our students are making in their lesson books, but more importantly to see how they are growing as musicians.  Playing an instrument is an activity that begins somewhat slowly for most students, but as they start to "get it"; it becomes increasingly more enjoyable as a player when they begin to produce really excellent music.  It is also an activity that they can enjoy for many years to come, as they enter high school, college, and beyond.  This year we have had MANY of our students playing in church, school chapel services, and accompanying choirs.  What a joy for us directors to see the musical gifts of our students being put to such good use!  As parents, your encouragement of your young musicians is crucial to their growth and advancement.

Music is one of the few activities that can be enjoyed for a lifetime, both as a participant and as a spectator.  It is a passion that touches the emotional, physical, and intellectual senses.  As Martin Luther so beautifully stated, "Music makes people kinder, gentler, more staid and reasonable. I am strongly persuaded that after theology there is no art that can be placed on a level with music; for besides theology music is the only art capable of affording peace and joy of the heart."

This is also a good time to encourage band members and parents to continue with band for next year, whether it is in the FVL Schools Band Program or in high school! You have all invested a good amount of time and money in instrumental music.  Being a part of the FVL Schools Band Program is a great educational experience and a FUN activity.  All of that is magnified in a high school band program!

Call Received

I want to inform you that I (Mr. Neujahr) received a Divine Call this past Monday to serve as the Band Director at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School.  The duties would include conducting their two high school bands, directing the jazz ensemble and pep band, conducting the musical orchestra, and giving grade school band lessons.  I am deeply honored and humbled at the same time to have been given this call!

I ask for your prayers, and that the Holy Spirit grants me clarity and peace of mind as I reach a decision on the two calls which I now hold.  I also ask for any advice or wisdom from you band parents, and your comments would be deeply appreciated.

2019 FVL Schools Band Awards

Last week at our Awards program, several students were the recipients of our Outstanding Attendance Award. These students truly deserved the award, as they attended every single practice, or missed just one.  That is an amazing feat, considering that we met on eighteen Saturdays throughout the year, and performed in three concerts!  Many of these students also performed for the Solo and Ensemble Festival, which added another Saturday, and also participated in the WELS Middle School Honor Festival on another Saturday!  Most of our band students are also involved in soccer, volleyball, basketball, cheer, and countless other activities.  We certainly appreciate their dedication to our FVL Schools Band Program, and thank the parents for helping them to achieve this award!

April 11 Update

Final Weekend of Rehearsals and Performances!

We have arrived at the end of our 2018-2019 FVL Schools Band year!  How exciting to think of where we were last September, and where we are now.  It is always great to see the growth in our student musicians, most notably the Cadet Band and their advancement.  It really has been a very good year.  We thank the Lord for his continued blessings on our FVL Schools Band Program!

Saturday, April 13 - Final rehearsal followed by Band Awards
Jazz Class will follow the Awards for those who can stay (30 - 45 minutes)

Sunday, April 14 - FVL Schools Band Concert, 2:00 PM (Cadet Band and Concert Winds)

Following our final rehearsal on Saturday, April 13, we will be handing out various awards, including medals for students who completed books since Musicfest, WSMA Solo Medals, Attendance Awards, and the Director's Awards (2).  Our awards will be presented in the FVL Auditorium.  We would like all band students and parents to be in attendance if at all possible. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins (and other siblings) are also welcome!

Sunday, April 14 - FVL Schools Spring Band Concert Information
The concert begins at 2:00 PM in the FVL Auditorium.
  • Band members should arrive by 1:00 PM (Concert Black and White clothing), so we can hand out Concert Vests and Ties prior to warm up.  Cadet Band and Concert Winds will report to their regular rehearsal rooms at that time.
  • The students are encouraged to wear their medals for completing books to the concert!  It adds a special touch to the band uniform, and is a visible acknowledgement of a job well-done!
  • Students who were awarded medals for the Solo Festival are also encouraged to wear them for the concert.

Parent volunteers will be needed to help distribute the vests and ties prior to the concert, as well as receive them following the concert. No need to sign up ahead of time - simply come to the warm up rooms and lend a hand.  A few of our "regular" vest volunteers will not be there, so if any parents have experience with vests, please help as we could certainly use your expertise!

A few volunteers are also needed to collect the Free-Will Offering during our concert on Sunday.  This could be moms, dads, older siblings, etc.  If you can assist, simply meet back at the main Auditorium Entrance following the Cadet Band performance.

Band Lessons and FVL instruments

Even with the numerous school cancellations during the past few months, both Mr. Kramer and Mr. Neujahr will have reached the minimum of 24 lessons at every school in the next week or two.  Some schools will even be one or two lessons higher.  So our lesson schedule will be winding down by the last full week in April.

I will publish in next week's Udate the final lesson date for each school.  Most schools will be having a lesson this next week prior to Easter.

Students who are using an FVL-owned instrument will be turning them in to either Mr. Kramer or Mr. Neujahr at their final lesson.  FVL-owned instruments are sent to Heid Music every spring for annual repair and maintenance. Students who will be renting them from us next year will, in most cases, be given the same instrument next year.  Students who are taking summer lessons or attending music camps will be issued an instrument after they are returned from Heid Music.  If you will need an instrument for the summer, please contact James Neujahr.

Upcoming Lesson Schedule Modifications

Mr. Neujahr will not be giving lessons on Thursday of this coming week (April 11).  He will be attending a workshop at UW-Oshkosh.  The workshop is for teachers who are teaching a dual-credit course through UW-O.  Mr. Neujahr is an adjunct UW-O faculty member teaching College Music Theory at FVL.  The students can earn 3 college credits for taking the class.

Mr. Neujahr will also not be giving lessons on Wednesday, April 17.  FVL is hosting a WSMA Band Concert Festival that day.  In addition to the FVL Symphonic Band, three bands from St. Francis Xavier Middle School will also be perfoming.  All of the bands will be adjudicated by a panel of three judges, and will also receive a rating.

Thanks also to the many parents, family members, and relatives who were in attendance to see our students perform.  Your participation in their musical education is so very important.  Thanks to all!

February 22 Update

Friday, February 22, 2019

Rehearsal Saturday, February 23

We have a regular rehearsal scheduled for Saturday, February 23.  Counting this rehearsal, we have only FIVE rehearsals left before our Spring Concert in April!

Here is the remaining schedule:

Saturday, February 23 Regular rehearsal
Saturday, March 2 NO SATURDAY REHEARSAL.  7th and 8th grade student Solo Festival at WHS
Saturday, March 9 Regular rehearsal
Saturday, March 30 Regular rehearsal
Saturday, April 6 Regular rehearsal
Saturday, April 13 Regular rehearsal and Band Awards
Sunday, April 14 Spring Concert - 2:00 PM

Well, another day, and another threat of an oncoming winter storm.  It must be Wisconsin!  At this time it looks like we will be able to have the rehearsal as scheduled.  The snow total for Saturday morning will be in the neighborhood of 1 - 3 inches.  The uncertain part about the weather forecast is whether freezing rain or drizzle will be mixed in.  The "really heavy stuff" will be coming Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

As always, it is up to the parents to decide if the conditions are safe for travel or not.

This is a good time to review our . . . .

Inclement Weather Procedures

If we need to cancel a Saturday rehearsal, please check the band's website for information regarding rehearsal cancellations or modifications.  If a rehearsal is canceled, a notice will always be put on the top of the homepage in bold red letters.   If a rehearsal is not canceled, but you feel it is not safe to travel from your location, you can always make the decision to stay home.  A notice will not normally be put up prior to Saturday morning, unless we know for certain that the weather on Saturday will not allow for a rehearsal.

If we need to cancel a rehearsal, a decision will be made BEFORE 7:30 AM and the notice will be posted to the homepage by that time.

I will also send out an email if there is a known cancellation.  This is not always the best, as some parents have work-related email addresses and may not get the message in a timely fashion.

Please note that there will NOT be a notice on radio or TV stations.  Your source for cancellation notices will be this website and an email.

Solo and Ensemble Festival Information - March 2 at Waupaca HS

For much more information for parents with students performing a solo, refer back to the DIrector's Update for February 7.  In it you will find general information regarding what to wear, when to arrive, and so on, as well as student soloist introduction and music requirements.

We have received a preliminary schedule for the solos.  Please be aware that the times on this schedule may shift one way or the other by a few minutes, but they will be relatively close to what is on the sheet.  The reason for shifting times is because between now and early next week the various school directors will submit conflicts with their schedules (due to students in multiple events) and then the final schedule will be published.

This schedule also includes names of a few students who have indicated they will not be playing their solo.  So if you see your child's name on the schedule, I am aware, but the information did not get to Waupaca HS in time.  So their names will likely remain on the schedule.  Removing names from a schedule would have a drastic "trickle-down" effect on the rest of the schedule, so it is easier to leave them in.

Early next week, in addition to the final schedule, we will also receive maps of Waupaca HS and other information.  That additional information will give us room numbers for each site, warm up rooms, homerooms, canteen menus, where results will be posted, etc.  That information may be posted on this website, but will be sent via email to all families who have students participating.

Here is a link to the PRELIMINARY SOLO SCHEDULE

Note that this schedule includes both Fox Falley Lutheran HS (Fox Vly Luth HS) and the FVL Schools (Fox Vly Luth MS) times.
