Update for February 17

Rehearsal on Saturday, February 17

We will have rehearsal on Saturday, February 17.  This is the same weekend as the FVL Schools Basketball Tournament.  We realize that some kids may be involved in basketball games as players or cheerleaders.  That is OK, and students should be with their teams.  Most students should be able to make some or all of the band rehearsal, however, and we ask that if it is at all possible to attend band.  Many band students wear their uniforms/warm ups on that day to rehearsal, which is totally acceptable.  Even if students arrive late or have to leave early, that is better than not coming at all.  Last year we actually had very good attendance on Tournament weekend, since most of the kids are at FVL anyway cheering on their teams.

Members of the Concert Winds will be receiving new music on Saturday.  For students who cannot attend rehearsal due to BB games, they should try to stop in and at least pick up the new music, as well as turn in music that was performed at Winterfest.

Here is a summary of our remaining February dates:
February 17 - Regular rehearsal
February 24 - Solo Festival for 7th and 8th grade students; No rehearsal for Cadet/Concert Winds

In the month of March we will only have two rehearsals on Saturday, March 3 and March 10.  Then in April we have three rehearsals, on April 7, 14, and 21.  Then we are done!  So there aren't too many rehearsals left before our Spring Concert. Please make EVERY EFFORT to have your band students at those rehearsals.

Volunteer Request for the FVL Solo and Ensemble Festival

We have had a very good response with the Volunteer Sign Up!  We are still looking for more help, however.  Please consider helping to make our day a success.  We are mostly in need of afternoon Door Monitors and Room Chairmen, but various other tasks are also in need of help.

Schedule for the Solo and Ensemble Festival at Little Chute HS on March 3

Some of our FVL Schools Students will be performing their solos at Little Chute HS on March 3 due to their participation in the WELS Middle Schools Honors Band Festival on February 24.  PLEASE NOTE - the original site was to be Freedom HS, but has moved to Little Chute HS.  We have the schedule of the solo times.  Any other information, maps, and so on will be posted when we receive them.

Information for WELS Middle School Honors Band participants

Much of the following information was shared previously via email, but it would be helpful to have this information shared again.

Mrs. Temu will be our bus driver for the day!  Our students and Mr. Kramer will ride in a small Kobussen bus to the festival.  The bus will be at the Commons Entrance by 6:45, and will leave at 7:00 AM.  Please be on time for the departure.  The bus will return again following the concert.  Your son/daughter may ride the bus back to FVL (arrive approximately 9:30 PM) or you may give your son/daughter a ride home if you are at the concert.  Either way, please let Mr. Kramer know your intentions so that he is aware of your plans.  If giving your child a ride home, check them out personally with Mr. Kramer so we know everyone is accounted for.  If you are not there when the bus departs, your child will ride the bus.

Below are the documents we have received from Kettle Morain Lutheran regarding the Honors Festival.  Please read them so you are aware of what is needed for the day, such as what the students should wear for the day and the concert, schedules, meals, and so on. The Honors Festival is at Kettle Moraine Lutheran HS (KML) on Saturday, February 24.

Information for Student Soloists - February 24

Solo day is fast approaching!  Mr. Kramer and Mr. Neujahr have been working with most of our 7th and 8th graders for the past two months to prepare for this day.  The students have been improving each week with their solo preparations, and they should do very well!

Our Solo and Ensemble Festival will be held at Fox Valley Lutheran High School on Saturday, February 24.  This festival includes, in addition to our FVL Schools Band students, FVL HS, Waupaca HS, Clintonville HS, and St. Martin Lutheran Grade School (from Clintonville).

This is the same festival that the FVL high school band and choir students will be attending.  FVL has 37  events entered, including instrumental solos and ensembles, choral solos and ensembles, many piano solos, among other events.  The FVL Schools Band Program has 23 solo events entered!  Most are class B or C, but we do have a few class A solos entered as well.

Eight of our students will be performing their solos on March 3 at Freedom HS, as they are also participating in the WELS Middle School Honors Band Festival at Kettle Moraine Lutheran HS on February 24.  The basic information following will be the same for those students, but the schedules will come out about a week after the FVL schedules are announced.

This event will feature several performance sites, with rooms designated for vocal, piano, woodwind, percussion, and brass events.  In addition to solos, there will be many different ensembles performing, including jazz ensembles, brass and woodwind ensembles, show choirs, and so on.  I would strongly encourage our students to observe as many solos and other ensemble events during the day.  All of the event sites are open to the public, so parents and students can sit in on performances throughout the day.

We will receive the preliminary schedules and other information for February 24 in about two weeks.  I will post links to the schedules in a future Update when they are available.

IMPORTANT: If for some reason your son or daughter will NOT be performing their solo on February 24, please Email Mr. Neujahr as soon as possible so he can notify the Festival Manager and the schedules can be updated.

Following is information for students who are playing a solo on February 24.  Mr. Neujahr and Mr. Kramer will also discuss these items with the students at lessons as they prepare for that day.

Attire:  Dress up for your events.  No jeans, T-shirts, crew-neck shirts, tennis shoes, etc.  Ties are recommended for guys, ladies in dress/skirt or other nice attire.  Make an excellent first impression for the adjudicator!

Music:  You are responsible for all of your music for the day, including your judge's copy. Remember that NO PHOTOCOPIES are allowed for a WSMA event. EXCEPTION to the photocopy rule:  If your child is playing a solo from the "Standard of Excellence Festivals Solos" book, there is a notice on the bottom of each page giving you permission to photocopy for that event. In this case, give the adjudicator the book, and the student can play from the photocopy.

Number the measures in your judge's copy and your copy.  This MUST be done prior to playing.  Mr. Neujahr and Mr. Kramer will be providing the required 2 original "store bought" copies of the music if they don't already have the extra copy.  All students have their own solo book already, but they will need the additional copy for the adjudicator.

Homerooms/Case and Coat Storage:  The FVL Gym will be used as the homeroom for all schools.  A section of the bleachers will be labled showing each school's designated area.

Be Prompt!  Give yourself plenty of time to find your designated warm-up area and performance rooms. Generally, you should try to be in the designated warm-up site 20-30 minutes before your scheduled performance time.  It is a good idea to check your performance site to see if they are ahead or behind schedule.  Your performance time may be shifted earlier or later depending upon how the day is progressing in that particular site.

For those using an accompanist: Remember to tell your accompanist the necessary times and room numbers, etc.  A nice card and gift of money for all of the time put in by your accompanist is recommended.

Student Introductions

WSMA requires that students introduce their solo.  You may write it out and bring your sheet with you.  You may also memorize it.  Rehearse what you are going to say!  The introduction outline is as follows:

My name is (performer name), from Fox Valley Lutheran Middle School (or "FVL Schools")

My accompanist is (name of accompanist - if you have one)

I am performing (name of solo, and if appropriate, the movements being performed)

My solo was composed by (name of the composer or arranger)

An interesting aspect of this piece to listen for is. . . (something to listen for, such as interesting melodies, articulations, tempos, styles, etc)

-OR-

Something I learned while studying this piece is. . . (something that you learned about music, or something that this solo helped you to improve while practicing)

Solo and Ensemble Volunteers

Saturday, February 24th marks a big day in the music schedule of Fox Valley Lutheran High School! On that day our school will host the solo/ensemble festival for members of the Northeast Music Conference. Times for this event will be approximately 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with volunteer needs ranging from 7:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. In addition to FVL, the FVL Middle School Band students, St. Martin Lutheran Grade School, Clintonville HS, and Waupaca HS will be participating in our solo and ensemble event.

In order to make this event a successful and memorable experience for our students, we will need many volunteers to act as room chairmen, office workers, hall monitors, kitchen helpers, and adult supervisors for warm-up areas, homerooms, and the like. Job descriptions for these volunteer positions have been included in the Sign-Up form. We are looking for people who can help for the day or half-day, but even those parents who can spare a couple of hours will be greatly appreciated.

This is also a wonderful opportunity for other relatives, grandparents, FVL Band and Choir alumni, and supporters of FVL to get involved. If you know people that would like to help, please share the link with them or forward this email.

Please access the response form at the following link. Please submit the form no later than Friday, February 12th, so that we will have ample time plan for the day. Please email Mr. Neujahr at jneujahr@fvlhs.org with any questions you might have.
