Update for January 28

Regular Rehearsal this week

Both Cadet Band and Concert Winds will rehearse this Saturday, January 28.  We are busy preparing our selections for the upcoming FVL Musicfest - Time Travel to be held on Januray 29.  The Concert Winds will rehearse on the Stage this week, and the Cadet Band will be in the Choir Room as normal.

There will not be a jazz ensemble class this weekend.

Note that we will not have rehearsal on February 4, but will resume again on February 11.

This weekend is our FVL Musicfest performance!  It is not easy for our students to learn new music and prepare it for performance in just three short rehearsals.  Our directors want to thank them all for their efforts and their willingness to share their musical gifts with our audience!

For Musicfest information - such as when to report, what to wear, schedules, etc. - please refer back to the Director's Update for January 21.

WELS Summer Band Camp!

Many of our students have attended this camp in recent years, and they have all had a wonderful time!  The week-long overnight camp takes place at WLHS in Milwaukee and is happening  June 18-23! This year's theme is "Let's Celebrate!" and they are more than excited to share this wonderful week of fun, learning, and musical growth with our students. The camp is open to students entering 6-9th grade in the 2017-2018 school year.

The camp has a very nice website with information, such as contact information, cost, and registration forms at WELS Summer Band Camp.

The WELS Summer Band Camp Parent Letter has a lot more information as well.  Go to the link for a bit more information on what the students will experience at the camp.

Update for January 21

Regular Rehearsal this week and next week

Both Cadet Band and Concert Winds will rehearse this Saturday and next, January 21 and 28.  We are busy preparing our selections for the upcoming FVL Musicfest - Time Travel to be held on Januray 29.

Note that we will not have rehearsal on February 4, but will resume again on February 11.

Important message for parents of 7th and 8th graders

Most of our 7th and 8th grade students are preparing solos for the Solo and Ensemble Festival to be held at Clintonville HS on Saturday, February 25.  For more information on this topic, refer back to our Update for December 2.

Mr. Neujahr will be registering these solos with the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) next week, with all entries completed by Thursday, January 26.  Mr. Kramer and Mr. Neujahr have most of the information necessary, such as solo titles, accompmanists, and so on.

IMPORTANT - if your son or daughter will NOT be performing their solo on February 25, let Mr. Neujahr know immediately.  The FVL Schools Band Program covers the $10 registration fee, but we would rather not pay that if students will not be attending.

Musicfest Reminders

Our Cadet Band and Concert Winds will be performing on Sunday, January 29, for Musicfest.  Our three bands - FVL Schools Cadet and Wind Ensemble and the FVL Symphonic Band - will begin performance at 12:00 PM, and will be in the Auditorium.  Students should be at FVL by 11:15 that day to prepare for our performance.  Concert Winds members will meet in the Band Room, and Cadet Band members will meet in the Choir Room as usual.  Our FVL Schools Bands will be seated in the Auditorium between 12:00 and 1:00 so they can also watch the FVL Symphonic Band perform.  As there is lots of traffic through the hallways on Winterfest, student coats and cases should be brought directly into the Band and Choir room and not left in the hall.

Concert Winds and Cadet Band Dress for Musicfest

We will NOT be wearing our concert vests for Sunday's performance.  With the various activities available for students (Kid's Room in the small gym, Marionettes in the large gym, great food, etc.), we felt it would be best to save the vests and concert black and white for our more formal concert performances.

Students should wear "nice school/church clothes" for Sunday's performance.  This means NO jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.  Students may wear their black pants and white shirts if they would like.  Examples of nice dress would include dress slacks or khakis, polo shirts, button shirts with a tie, skirts or dresses, and so on.

Musicfest Large Group Schedule - FVL Auditorium unless noted
  • 12:00 FVL Schools Cadet Band
  • 12:15 FVL Schools Concert Winds
  • 12:30 FVL Symphonic Band
  • 1:15 Marionettes (large gym)
  • 2:00 Silent auction bidding closes (wave 1 - large gym)
  • 2:15 FVL Men's Choir
  • 2:30 FVL Women's Choir
  • 2:45 FVL A Cappella Choir
  • 3:00 Silent auction bidding closes (wave 2 - Commons)
  • 3:15 FVL Jazz Ensemble (Commons Stage)
  • 3:30 Wall of Giving Reveal (Commons)
  • 3:40 Choraliers

Fox Folk Marionettes (performance in the large gym) - This is always a big hit with the younger kids!  There will be plenty of time after the bands are finished performing to get to the gym on time.

In addition to this schedule, there will be food, small group entertainment in the FVL Commons, a silent auction in the Commons and large gym, and piano music in the large gym.  The entertainment is "come and go as you please", so feel free to stay for the afternoon and enjoy some amazing performances by our FVL Schools Bands, Choirs, and students from Fox Valley Lutheran HS.

Tickets are $2 at the door. All proceeds benefit the FVL band and choir programs.   As this is an FVL Passport Event, all members of the Cadet Band and Concert Winds will be admitted free to the event with their FVL Passport.

Parent Volunteer Opportunity for Musicfest (repeated from last week's Update)
All of our FVL Schools Band parents will have the opportunity to volunteer for Musicfest. Parents of our high school and grade school music students will all use the same online form.  What better way to get to know your fellow Music Parents than volunteering on such an exciting day?  Volunteer opportunities will be available in many areas, such as coat check, auction helpers, kitchen and meal helpers, set up and take down, and more.

Please click on the following SignUp.com link to sign up to volunteer for one or more spots on either Saturday, Jan. 28 for event setup (2-5PM), or Sunday, Jan. 29 for a shift during the event itself.

FVL Jazz Ensemble to Wisconsin Lutheran College Jazz Festival

Mr. Neujahr will not be at rehearsal on Saturday morning.  Mrs. Nogar will lead the rehearsal for the Concert Winds. Mr. Neujahr is heading to Milwaukee with the FVL Jazz Ensemble. They are paticipating in the WLC Jazz Festival. The Jazz Festival is on Saturday, with several other WELS high schools participating.  The day will be divided up with rehearsal time, jazz masterclasses, performance and section clinics, and the Festival Concert at 7:00 PM to close the day.

WELS Summer Band Camp!

Many of our students have attended this camp in recent years, and they have all had a wonderful time!  It is open to students who are currently in grades 6 - 8.  We will be receiving more information in the coming weeks, such as brochures, posters, and so on.  But for now you can visit the website for all the information, including contact information, cost, and registration information at the WELS Summer Band Camp website.

The camp will run from June 18 - 23, and will be held at Wisconsin Lutheran High School in Milwaukee.

Update for January 14

Happy New Year!

I pray that you all had an eventful Christmas and New Year break!  For many, it was an opportunity to take a breath, relax a bit, and enjoy the time with friends and relatives.  These first two weeks of lessons in 2017 have been a bit of a challenge, with weather delays, cancellations, and so on.  It is exciting that many of our students DID practice over the break, and it has been a pleasure to hear what our students accomplished during the vacation.  A few even worked ahead a page or two after missing lessons due to the weather.  Thanks, kids, for your efforts!

I had a wonderful experience at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago!  With over 17,000 directors registering for this event, it is the largest of its kind in the world.  I attended many clinics and concerts, as well as browse through the more than 500 music industry booths and displays in the exhibition hall.  It is also a great time to catch up with many friends and colleagues from around the country.

Saturday Rehearsals Resume on January 14

All of us have enjoyed the time off from our Saturday rehearsals.  Now it is time to get back to work!  Our next major project is preparing music for the FVL Musicfest (formerly known as "Winterfest") which will be held on Sunday, January 29. Please note that both our Cadet Band and Concert Winds will be performing on that day.

More information will be given for our performances that day in the coming weeks' Updates.  To help with your planning, the performance times of our bands will be as follows:

12:00 - Cadet Band
12:15 - Concert Winds
12:30 - FVL Symphonic Band

Both our Concert Winds and Cadet Band should be done performing by approximately 12:30 or a bit earlier.  All of our bands (FVL and FVL Schools bands) will be seated in the auditorium so that everyone can hear  all the band performances, much like we did at our November concert, so they will be in the auditorium until about 1:00.

In order to prepare for this performance, we will be rehearsing on the following Saturdays:

January 14
January  21
January 28
January 29 (Sunday) - FVL Musicfest

Go to the following link for our Full Saturday Rehearsal Schedule

FVL Schools Jazz Class will also meet this Saturday, as well as next week, February 21.

FVL Musicfest is just around the corner

As I mentioned in the previous section, our Cadet Band and Concert Winds will be performing for Musicfest.  Students should be at FVL by 11:15 that day to prepare for our performance.  Again, we will have more detailed information in the coming weeks.

We are very excited for the upcoming FVL Musicfest!  The theme this year is "Time Travel".  If you are unfamiliar with Musicfest, it is the biggest date on the musical calendar for Fox Valley Lutheran HS.  All of the FVL Bands and Choirs perform, as well as small groups, solos, duets, and so on.

This family friendly event will feature several genres of musical entertainment performed by members of the FVL family. Hours are 12:00 to 4:00 pm.  Besides the opportunity to listen to great music, a light lunch and desserts will be served. We will have a children's area in the small gym, and the FVL Marionettes will perform.  New this year will be a "Wall of Giving"!  There will also be an awesome silent auction with many great items to bid on. Admission is $2 at the door. All proceeds benefit the FVL band and choir programs.  As this is an FVL Passport Event, all members of the Cadet Band and Concert Winds will be admitted free to the event with their FVL Passport.

Parent Volunteer Opportunity for Musicfest
All of our FVL Schools Band parents will have the opportunity to volunteer for Musicfest. Inclement Weather Procedures

We have been blessed with excellent weather on Saturdays so far this year.  For that we are thankful!

With all of the weather-related issues lately, however, I am reminded that this will not always be the case.  If we need to cancel a Saturday rehearsal, please check the band's website for information regarding rehearsal cancellations or modifications.  If a rehearsal is canceled, a notice will always be put on the top of the homepage in bold red letters.   If a rehearsal is not canceled, but you feel it is not safe to travel from your location, you can always make the decision to stay home.  A notice will not normally be put up prior to Saturday morning, unless we know for certain that the weather on Saturday will not allow for a rehearsal.

If we need to cancel a rehearsal, a decision will be made BEFORE 7:30 AM and the notice will be posted to the homepage by that time.

I will also try to send out an email if there is a known cancellation.  This is not always the best, as some parents have work-related email addresses and may not get the message in a timely fashion.

Please note that there will NOT be a notice on radio or TV stations.  Your one source for cancellations will be this website.
