Update for November 19

Final Rehearsal for 2016

We will be rehearsing this Saturday, November 19.  This is our eighth and final rehearsal in preparation for our Fall Concert.  The Concert Winds will rehearse in the FVL Auditorium, and the Cadet Band will rehearse in the Choir Room as normal.

Final rehearsal - November  19 (8:15 - 9:45 AM)
November 20 - Fall Concert

Our Fall Concert will begin at 2:00 PM.

The concert will be streamed live on the FVL YouTube channel!  Please let your relatives know about this - grandparents or others who would like to watch the concert but are too far away to attend.  Go to the following link to watch the concert: FVL YouTube Channel.

Saturday Rehearsals take a Break!

Following our concert this Sunday, we will be taking a break from our Saturday rehearsals.  There will be no practices from Saturday, November 26 through Saturday, January 7.  We will resume our Saturday rehearsals again on January 14.

Thanks to parents and students for your continued efforts to attend our rehearsals.  As you know, with only 8-10 rehearsals planned for each semester, student attendance is crucial to our overall success as a performing ensemble.

Reminder of Concert Notes for Sunday, November 20

Our concert on Sunday, November 20, will begin at 2:00 PM, and will take place in the FVL Auditorium.

Students will need to be at FVL by 1:15 PM on the day of the concert so they can receive their vests and have adequate time for group warm up before the concert begins.

Our bands will be sitting together as a group for the concert, so that each band can watch the other performances.  The order of performance will be the FVL Symphonic Band, the Cadet Band, and the Concert Winds.  So that you can plan your afternoon, the concert should be over before between 3:15 and 3:30 PM.

When students arrive on concert day, they should go to their "normal" rehearsal rooms - Cadet Band to the Choir Room and the Concert Winds to the Band Room.  Because of increased traffic during concert events, cases should be brought to the rehearsal room and NOT left in the hallway as we do on Saturday mornings.

For concert dress (what our students should wear), refer back to previous posts from the October Updates.

Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin (LVW) Preview Saturday, November 19

Most of our 8th grade band students have received a flyer with information for our upcoming LVW 2017 Preview Day to be held on Saturday, November 19.  The event will run from 1 - 4 PM.  All of our 8th grade band students are welcome and invited to attend, as they are all eligible for this awesome summer marching band.  In fact, a few of our 8th graders have already registered to attend this event!  Parents are also invited, as we wil preview our upcoming 2017 season, look at our performance and rehearsal schedules, and talk about how we distribute information moving forward.

Pizza will be served to all in attendance before heading home, so we want all attendees (student and parents) to fill out the Preview Day Registration Form.

Brass and woodwind students should bring their regular band instrument to the Preview Day.  Students who are interested in our Percussion section or Color Guard do not need to bring instruments, as the equipment will be provided.

All students attending should wear comfortable clothing suitable for physical activity (Marching!).  Sweats or shorts are perfectly acceptable.

Update for November 12

Only Two Rehearsals to Go!

We are now officially in "crunch time"!  Only two rehearsals to go until we present our Fall Concert.  The bands have been making excellent progress since we began rehearsals in September.  Seeing the progress from week to week is the best part of the "journey" that we collectively take to present a finished product. Thanks to all of our directors and band members for their dedication and willingness to make this wonderful music happen is such a short period of time.

Here is our upcoming rehearsal and performance schedule:
November 12 - regular rehearsal
November 19 - regular rehearsal
November 20 - Fall Band Concert

Our Fall Concert will begin at 2:00 PM. This concert will feature our two FVL Schools Bands - the Cadet Band (beginning students) and the Concert Winds (students with more than one year of experience).  The FVL Symphonic Band will also play a few selections at this concert.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to see the entire FVL band program, from beginners to high school!

Following our November concert, we will not have Saturday morning practices again until Saturday, January 14!  I should point out that lessons will continue into December as normal.

Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin!

All 8th grade band members and their parents are invited to the Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin (LVW) Preview Day on Saturday, November 19, at FVL.  The event will begin at 1:00 PM, and will end with a pizza party (no charge!).   The entire event will be over by approximately 4:00.  It is our hope that all current 8th grade members can join us for this exciting preview event.

More information for our Preview can be found on LVW's website.  There is also a link to the RSVP for the LVW Preview Day.  So that we can plan accurately for our pizza order, please RSVP by Monday, November 14.

LVW is an activity offered through the FVL band program.  It is open to all 8th graders and all high school students and is even open to non-band students who are interested in color guard and our "front ensemble".

We are very excited for our upcoming summer!  LVW will be participating in 10 parades and 10 field shows between June 9 and July 15.  We will be performing throughout eastern and southern Wisconsin, and Traverse City, Michigan during our 2017 summer tour!

For those who are unfamiliar with our group, Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin is a competitive marching band made up of students from nine WELS high schools:

Fox Valley LHS - Appleton
Kettle Moraine LHS - Jackson
Manitowoc LHS -Manitowoc
Luther HS - Onalaska
Luther Preparatory School - Watertown
Northland LHS -Wausau
Shoreland LHS - Somers
Winnebago Lutheran Academy - Fond du Lac
Wisconsin Lutheran HS - Milwaukee

LVW is also open to ANY WELS student in grade 8 - 12, no matter where they live or what school they attend!  Therefore, public school and home school students are also eligible, as long as they are members of a WELS congregation.

You can view a full-color, twelve page LVW 2017 Membership Information Packet with an overview of our season and much more on the LVW Website under our JOIN page.

LVW functions to provide a Christ-centered activity within which students can experience growth, both as an individual and as a member of a group.  Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin has always been one of the finest parade marching bands in the Midwest, and has displayed its excellence on the street with many award-winning performances from Calgary to Minnesota, from Wisconsin and Michigan all the way to Maine, Massachusetts and Georgia!  In the summer of 2010, LVW entered competitive field marching with great success.  This coming summer will undoubtedly bring the same excitement that our LVW family, both students and adults, were treated to for the past thirty-nine years.

Since our founding in 1978, LVW has performed or appeared in Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Wyoming, Alberta, and Ontario.  All our success, however, is governed by one basic philosophy: All that we do is done to the glory of God!

If you would like to learn more about the group, plan on joining us on November 19 for an exciting intro to what life is like in Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin! The day will include information for parents, with special emphasis on answering questions you may have about our group, rehearsal logistics, summer travel, cost, and so on.  Even if you are not sure if LVW is a possibility for this coming summer, please join us to find out what our group can offer your child at some point in their high school career. Students are to bring their woodwind/brass instrument to the preview day.  Percussion students are not required to bring their instruments.

You can find out much more about Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin on our website at www.lutheranvanguard.org.  We also have a very informative page on Facebook under "Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin".

Update for November 5

Rehearsals resume this week

After two weeks off, we are back for rehearsal on Saturday, November 5.  Counting this rehearsal, we only have three more rehearsals until our concert on November 20.  Things continue to go very well!  Thanks to all of our parents and band members for making such a great effort to attend these important Saturday rehearsals.

We will be fitting our Cadet Band and Concert Winds members with concert vests during the rehearsal on November 5.  Thanks to our parent volunteers for helping to make this happen!  If your son or daughter will miss this weekend, we will try to fit the vests either at an upcoming rehearsal or before the concert on November 20.

Here is our upcoming rehearsal and performance schedule:
November 5 - regular rehearsal
November 12 - regular rehearsal
November 19 - regular rehearsal
November 20 - Fall Band Concert

Our Fall Concert will begin at 2:00 PM. This concert will feature our FVL Schools Bands - the Cadet Band (beginning students) and the Concert Winds (students with more than one year of experience).  The FVL Symphonic Band will also play a few selections at this concert.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to see the entire FVL band program, from beginners to high school!

Following our November concert, we will not have Saturday morning practices again until Saturday, January 14!

Concert Vest fittings on Saturday, November 5

We will be fitting the concert vests for the Cadet Band and Concert Winds students on Saturday, November 5 during the rehearsal.  We have several moms who have volunteered to help.  If any more parents are willing to help, or would just like to be around to "learn the ropes", you are more than welcome to join us. Thanks for considering this very important volunteer opportunity!

The concert vest fittings will take place in the Green Room (across from the Choir Room entrance) due to a Nothing but Net tournament at FVL this weekend.

Then on the day of the concert (November 20) we would also need parent volunteers to assist with distributing the vests before the concert and collecting them after the concert.  Let me know if you are able to help on concert day.

CONCERT DRESS reminder - please refer to previous posts from October for a full description of what our band students need to wear for our upcoming concert.

8th Grade ACT Aspire Test this Saturday

Some of our band students may be taking the Aspire test this Saturday. If your son or daughter is taking the test, they may certainly leave rehearsal early.  As they need to be in their testing rooms before 9:00, they may be able to attend rehearsal for about the first 30 or 40 minutes.  If they are taking the test on November 5, they must get to FVL early enough to be fitted for their concert vests before going to the testing room, even if they are not going to attend the rehearsal.

Lesson Schedule Changes for November 7-11

Both Mr. Neujahr and Mr. Kramer will be participating with the FVL Symphonic Band on Thursday, November 10 and Friday, November 11 at several Veteran's Programs.  On Thursday, the FVL Symphonic Band will be playing at St. Paul, Appleton and Bethlehem, Hortonville for their programs.  Then on Friday, the band will play for the FVL Program, and then play for the Appleton area Veteran's Day Observance in downtown Appleton.

Mr. Kramer will also be working on several band-related projects this next week, so most of his time will be spent at FVL.

With those items in mind, here are the lesson schedule changes for this coming week:

Mr. Neujahr will not be giving lessons at Riverview on Thursday, November 10.  He will be giving lessons as normal on Monday - Wednesday.

Mr. Kramer will give lessons at Emanuel, New London on Friday afternoon instead of Friday morning.  He will not be giving any other lessons from Monday - Thursday.

Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin - A great opportunity for our 8th Grade Students!

Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin (LVW) is about to begin their 2017 season.  This will be the 40th Anniversary season for LVW!  FVL has been a major contributor to LVW all of those years, as we have served as the "Home" for LVW and every year more than half of the LVW members have been FVL students.  We thank God for the marvelous blessing that LVW has been, and ask His continued blessings as we move toward our next season.

For MUCH more information about this wonderful program, please refer to the LVW POST.
