Update for January 30

No Rehearsal on Saturday, January 31

Due to the Eastern Valley Middle School and High School Honors Festival this weekend, there will be no rehearsal on Saturday.  Rehearsal will be held again on February 7 at the normal times.  Please note that we will also not have rehearsal on Saturday, February 14, due to the many grade schools who have teacher's conference (no school) on Thursday and Friday, February 12 and 13.  Enjoy the days off!

Eastern Valley Middle School Honors Band

Congratulations again to the fourteen FVL Schools Band members who have been selected to the Eastern Valley Conference (EVC) Middle School Honors Band!  These students will be our representatives at the honors event hosted by Ripon High School. The band will number approximately 100 students from the schools of the Eastern Valley Conference, which is the conference that includes Fox Valley Lutheran HS.  The EVC Honors Festival will conclude with the band and choir concert at 3:00 PM.  The concert is free and open to the public, and will take place in the RHS gymnasium.

RSS Feed for Director's Updates Now Available

We have now made available an RSS feed for the Director's Updates!  Mrs. Ragner, one of our media and technology gurus, has added an icon at the bottom of the FVL Schools Band homepage ( feed-icon-28x28.png Link to blog RSS feed).  Now you can subscribe to this feed, and you will have the Director's Updates sent directly to your mobile device when a new one is posted.  Thanks Mrs. Ragner!

Winterfest 2015

Thanks to ALL for your contributions to the 2015 Winterfest "Music of Stage and Screen"!  We had many parents who volunteered their time in the Band's Hot Drinks Bar, with special thanks to Jodi Slominsky for coordinating the booth.  Thanks to all of our parents who made sure our Concert Winds students arrived at FVL on time.  Thanks also to our Concert Winds members who performed admirably, especially when we consider only three rehearsals to prepare this music, and many of our students missed rehearsal time due to illness, tournaments, and so on.  The Junior Choirs from both Riverview Lutheran and Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran schools also performed this year.  Thanks to those students and their directors for volunteering to perform on "the big stage".

All in all, it was a fantastic day!  Thanks for your attendance!

Update for January 24

Final Rehearsal of the Month

This Saturday, January 24, will be the final rehearsal of the month.  We will NOT have rehearsal on Saturday, January 31 due to the Eastern Valley Conference Honors Festival being held that day for selected students from our FVL Schools Concert Winds, the FVL HS Band and the FVL HS Choir.

We will be changing rehearsal locations for this week's rehearsal.  The Concert Winds will rehearse on the FVL Auditorium Stage in preparation for this Sunday's performance at the FVL Winterfest.  The Cadet Band will rehearse in the FVL Band Room instead of the Choir Room.

Lesson Books Completed

Since we are approximately one half of the way through our lessons for the year, I thought it would be a good time to give credit to those students who have completed a lesson book and moved on in our series "Standard of Excellence".  Our lesson series contains three books, 1 (Red), 2 (Blue), and 3 (Green).  We use the Rubank Advanced Method for students who advance beyond Book 3 fo the Standard of Excellence series.

Brittney Thede, Grade 6, Trombone, Mount Olive Appleton - completed 1
Autumn Vah, Grade 6, Flute, St. Paul Appleton - completed 1
Thomas Dierks, Grade 6, Tenor Saxophone, St. Paul Appleton - completed 2
Aaron Melso, Grade 6, Euphonium, Riverview Appleton - completed 2
Alaina Thern, Grade 7, Flute, Immanuel Greenville - completed 2
Lorna Caswell, Grade 7, Clarinet, St. Paul Appleton - completed 2

Congratulations to all of these students!  They will also receive their medal at this week's rehearsal for completing their books.

With our huge group of beginning band students this year, look for many students to complete books before the end of the year.  Those medals will be given out on our Band Awards Day on Saturday, April 25.

Winterfest Reminders

Our Concert Winds will be performing on Sunday for Winterfest.  Our performance will be at 12:00 PM, and will be in the Auditorium.  Students should be at FVL by 11:15 that morning to prepare for our performance.  Concert Winds members will meet in the band room.  As there is lots of traffic through the hallways on Winterfest, student coats and cases should be brought directly into the band room and not left in the hall.

Concert Winds Dress for Winterfest

Concert Winds will NOT be wearing our concert vests for Sunday's performance.  With the various activities available for students (DJ in the small gym from 1 - 3, Marionettes in the large gym, great food, etc.), we felt it would be best to save the vests and concert black and white for our more formal concert performances.  In addition, several of our band members will be singing with their junior choirs, and this will eliminate the need for a change of clothes after our performance.

Students should wear "nice school/church clothes" for Sunday's performance.  This means NO jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.  Students may wear their black pants and white shirts if they would like.  Examples of nice dress would include dress slacks or khakis, polo shirts, button shirts with a tie, skirts or dresses, and so on.

Information for Parents with students participating in the EVC Middle School Honors Band

Congratulations to those students from our program who have been selected to participate in the Eastern Valley Conference Middle School Honors Band on Saturday, January 31 Ripon High School!  Here is information for those families.

Bring black dress pants, black shoes and black socks for the concert.  The students will receive their EVC Honors t-shirt on the day of the event, which they will wear for the concert.

The concert is open to the public - Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Students should bring a pencil and ALL of the music they have been given.

Band members should be well rested - it will be a very busy day!

Update for January 17

Regular Rehearsal for Saturday, January 17

We will be gathering for our second rehearsal of the second semester this week.  We had OUTSTANDING attendance last week in the Concert Winds!  Thanks for making the rehearsals a priority!  It was a different story in the Cadet Band, with about 16 students missing.  This was due in large part to illness.  Riverview was especially hard hit, with about one-third of their school out last week Friday.  Thanks to our parents for keeping sick kids home!  With students from 14 of our area Lutheran schools participating on Saturday mornings, we don't need to start an epidemic.

We also appreciate the contact (via email or phone) from those parents that let us know ahead of time if students will miss due to illness or other reasons.  The best method to let me know is still probably my email, which is jneujahr@fvlhs.org.  That way I can see your message, even if it is sent rather late in the morning.  If you would like, you can also copy Beverly Quella, our attendance coordinator, on emails alerting us to an absence.  Her email is Beverly Quella (baquella@gmail.com) or call 920-540-1960.

That leaves two rehearsals for our Concert Winds to prepare for their Winterfest performance on Sunday, January 25.  We are attempting to learn two to three new pieces of music, so attendance at these rehearsals are very important.

There is a very large wrestling tournament at FVL this weekend.  Therefore there will be LOTS of activity in the gyms and the Commons.  Be prepared for a huge crowd of people, and also for a much more crowded parking lot than on normal Saturdays.

FVL Jazz Ensemble to Wisconsin Lutheran College Jazz Festival

Mr. Neujahr will not be at rehearsal this weekend.  Mrs. Nogar will lead the rehearsal for the Concert Winds. Mr. Neujahr will be in Milwaukee with the FVL Jazz Ensemble. They are paticipating in the WLC Jazz Festival.  The group is very excited for this trip!  We will be leaving today (Friday) after school, with some rehearsal tonight, a meal at the Cheesecake Factory, and a hotel stay at the Holiday Inn Express. The majority of the Jazz Festival is on Saturday, with five other WELS high schools participating.  The day will be divided up with rehearsal time, jazz masterclasses, performance and section clinics, and the Festival Concert at 7:00 PM to close the day.

Auditorium Performance Schedule for Winterfest

Here is a listing of the Winterfest performance times for the larger groups.  These will, for the most part, take place in the FVL Auditorium, with the exception of the FVL Jazz Ensemble.  Notice that the Concert Winds will be performing at Noon.

11:30         FVL Symphonic Band
12:00         FVL Schools Band (Concert Winds meet at 11:15 in the band room)
12:45         FVL Men's Choir
1:00            St. Peter, Freedom Church Choir
1:15            FVL Women's Choir
1:30            Riverview Junior Choir
1:45            Shepherd of the Valley Junior Choir
2:15            FVL A Cappella Choir
2:30            BASKET BIDDING ENDS in the large gym
2:45            FVL Jazz Ensemble (Commons Stage)
3:15            FVL Choraliers

12:40 - 1:10       Fox Folk Marionettes (performance in the large gym) - Always a big hit with the younger kids!

In addition to this schedule, there will be food and small group entertainment in the FVL Commons, a silent auction in the large gym, and piano music in the large gym.  The entertainment is "come and go as you please", so feel free to stay for the afternoon and enjoy some amazing performances by our FVL Schools Band members, area choirs, and students from Fox Valley Lutheran HS.

Tickets are $3 in advance and $4 at the door. Students 11 and under are free. All proceeds benefit the FVL band and choir programs.  All members of the Concert Winds will be admitted free to the event with their FVL Grade School Pass.

Volunteer Request for Winterfest

Jodi Slominsky is coordinating the Hot beverage table for Winterfest through the FVL Schools Band Program.  She is looking for volunteers high school age or older to help with the sale of coffee and hot chocolate. The work is not difficult, so no special skills are necessary. Jodi would like two people at the table from 11-4 and maybe some help, if needed, for clean up afterwards. If any parents or older siblings could volunteer an hour or two of your time it would be greatly appreciated. We prefer no small children at the table with you while you are volunteering due to the danger of cords and very hot liquids.

Jodi can be contacted at jamdds1997@gmail.com or 920-594-1946.  Ideally shifts will be 11-1, 1-3, 3-cleanup. Please let Jodi know which shift you would like. Times can be flexible as needed. Thank you in advance for your help and we look forward to working with you on Sunday the 25th!

Update for January 10

Cadet Band and Concert Winds resume rehearsals after a LONG break

After a very restful and LONG six week break, our bands will resume our Saturday rehearsals this weekend.  I know our band members and parents had plenty to do over the past month and a half, so the break from rehearsals has been well timed.  Now it is time to get back together and continue to make beautiful music!

Schedule for the Second Semester

Please check the FVL Schools Calendar for a listing of the second semester rehearsals and performances.  Listed below are our performances for the second semester.

Sunday, January 25 - FVL Winterfest (Concert Winds perform - Time of performance is 12:00 PM)

Saturday, January 31 - Eastern Valley Conference Honors Band and Choir Festival at Ripon HS (for selected students from the Concert Winds).  This festival also includes the high school bands and choirs from the EVC.

Saturday, March 7 - Eastern Valley Conference Solo and Ensemble Festival at Waupaca HS.  There will be no rehearsal this day, but many of our Concert Winds students will be participating in the Festival by playing their solo.

Wednesday, April 1 - Concert Winds participate in the WSMA Concert Festival at FVL.  This will be an adjudicated performance and will satisfy our requirement to be a member of WSMA.

Sunday, April 27 - FVL Middle School Band Concert, 6:00 PM (Cadet Band and Concert Winds)

FVL Winterfest is just around the corner

Our Concert Winds will be performing for Winterfest.  Our performance will be at 12:00 PM, and will be in the Auditorium.  Students should be at FVL by 11:15 that morning to prepare for our performance.  We will have more detailed information in the coming weeks.

We are very excited for the upcoming FVL Winterfest!  The theme this year is "The Music of Stage and Screen".  If you are unfamiliar with Winterfest, it is the biggest date on the musical calendar for Fox Valley Lutheran HS.  All of the FVL Bands and Choirs perform, and this year we will also include performances by some of our schools' Junior choirs!  Performing this year will be the Junior Choirs from Riverview Lutheran and Shepherd of the Valley.  We will also have a guest performance by the St. Peter, Appleton Church Choir.

"The Music of Stage and Screen" is scheduled for Sunday, January 25. This family friendly event will feature several genres of musical entertainment performed by members of the FVL family. Hours are 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Besides the opportunity to listen to great music, food will be served from the kitchen and desserts will be offered in the canteen. The FVL Schools Parent committee will have a coffee bar.  A DJ is set to perform in the children's room from 1 - 3 PM, and the FVL Marionettes will also do a show.  There will also be an awesome basket auction with many great items to bid on. Tickets are $3 in advance and $4 at the door. Students 11 and under are free. All proceeds benefit the FVL band and choir programs.  All members of the Concert Winds will be admitted free to the event with their FVL Grade School Pass.

Update on two new students to our program

I mentioned in the post from December 23 that we welcome two homeschool students to our program. Here is some updated information.  Both began taking lessons in this week at Riverview Lutheran.   They also have previous band experience with the Valley Troubadors, a Home School band program from northeast Wisconsin.  The two students are Atticus Berghauer  - Grade 6, who plays alto saxophone, and Aragorn Berghauer - Grade 5, who is a percussionist.  Both students will be members of the Concert Winds.

Inclement Weather Procedures

We have been blessed with excellent weather on Saturdays so far this year.  We were fortunate that the recent cold spell missed our scheduled rehearsal dates.  This weekend looks to be OK, and MUCH warmer than the past several days.  For that we are thankful!

As we get closer to potential inclement weather, remember to check the band's website for information regarding rehearsal cancellations.  If a rehearsal is canceled, a notice will always be put on the top of the homepage in bold red letters.   If a rehearsal is not canceled, but you feel it is not safe to travel from your location, you can always make the decision to stay home.  A notice will not normally be put up prior to Saturday morning, unless we know for certain that the weather on Saturday will not allow for a rehearsal.

If we need to cancel a rehearsal, a decision will be made BEFORE 7:30 AM and the notice will be posted to the top of the website by that time.
