Update for November 22

Rehearsal on Saturday, November 22

We will be rehearsing this Saturday, November 22.  This is our eighth and final rehearsal in preparation for our Fall Concert.  The Concert Winds will rehearse in the FVL Auditorium, and the Cadet Band will rehearse in the Choir Room as normal.

Final rehearsal - November  22 (8:15 - 9:45 AM)

November 23 - Fall Concert

Our Fall Concert will begin at 6:00 PM, and not 6:30 as it shows on our schedule.

Concert Information for November 23

Our concert on Sunday, November 23 will include performances by the FVL Schools Band Program's Cadet Band and the Concert Winds, as well as the Symphonic Band from Fox Valley Lutheran HS.  The concert will take place in the FVL Auditorium.

Students will need to be at FVL by 5:15 PM on the day of the concert so they can receive their vests and have adequate time for group warm up before the concert begins.  Vests and bow ties will be handed out prior to and should be returned immediately after the concert.

Our bands will be sitting together as a group for the concert, so that each band can watch the other performances.  The order of performance will be the FVL Symphonic Band, the Cadet Band, and the Concert Winds.  So that you can plan your evening, the concert should be over before between 7:15 and 7:30 PM.

When students arrive on concert night, they should go to their "normal" rehearsal rooms - Cadet Band to the Choir Room and the Concert Winds to the Band Room.  Because of increased traffic during concert events, cases should be brought to the rehearsal room and NOT left in the hallway as we do on Saturday mornings.

Ladies should wear black dress shoes, black socks or black hose, full length black pants (not faded), and a white button blouse with long sleeves. No tennis shoes, leggings, or capri style pants. Do not wear black skirts.

Gentlemen should wear black dress shoes, black socks, black belt, black pants (not faded), and a white dress shirt.

Saturday Rehearsals take a Break!

Following our concert this Sunday, we will be taking a break from our Saturday rehearsals.  There will be no practices from Saturday, November 29 through Saturday, January 3.  We will resume our Saturday rehearsals again on January 10.

Attendance has been nothing short of spectacular for the first half of our year!  Thanks to parents and students for your continued efforts to attend our rehearsals.  As you know, with only 8-10 rehearsals planned for each semester, student attendance is crucial to our overall success as a performing ensemble.

Mr. Kramer will also be teaching his Thursday lessons (Trinity, Neenah and St. Peter, Freedom) on MONDAY, November 24.  Students at Immanuel, Greenville will NOT be having lessons this week.  Mr. Kramer's Tuesday lessons (Emanuel, New London and Bethlehem, Hortonville) will be given as normal.

EVC Middle School Honors Band Reminder

Students who are participating in the EVC Middle School Honors event this coming January are reminded to fill out the Medical Form and the Permission Forms and return it to Mr. Neujahr by Saturday, November 22.  If the form is left at home, parents or students can also bring it to the concert on Sunday and hand it to Mr. Neujahr or Mrs. Nogar.

Much more information about LVW and their upcoming 2015 season is avaialable in the Director's Postfrom November 7, as well as on LVW's website.

Inclement Weather Procedures

We have been blessed with excellent weather on Saturdays so far this year.  Since we have no Saturday rehearsals from Thanksgiving until after the New Year, the potential for nasty weather will be greater when we resume next semester.

If a rehearsal is canceled, a notice will always be put on the top of the FVL Schools Band homepage in bold red letters.   If a rehearsal is not canceled, but you feel it is not safe to travel from your location, you can always make the decision to stay home.  A notice will not normally be put up prior to Saturday morning, unless we know for certain that the weather on Saturday will not allow for a rehearsal.

If we need to cancel a rehearsal, a decision will be made BEFORE 7:30 AM and the notice will be posted to the top of the website by that time.

Please note that we will NOT contact TV and Radio stations to post cancellation information.  It will ONLY be on our band's website homepage as described above.

Solo Music Update

Thanks to all for your patience last week during the solo music selection!  I do appreciate the extra time given by our parents and students to keep the process orderly.  My apologies for not having an accurate price list on hand.  Students will be receiving two copies of the solo (or solo book) and a piano accompaniment part (or book).  The second copy of the solo is required for the adjudicator for the day of the solo event.  The music can be paid for after the students receive it.  Pricing information will be avaialble at that time.  Music can be paid for either by cash or check (made out to "FVL Schools Band Program" with "solo music" on the memo line), or can be paid for via our online payment form on the FVL Schools Band Payments page.

An order for the solo music was already placed with Heid Music, so you do not need to order anything. Much of the music the students selected will be in stock at Heid Music.  Some of it may need to be ordered from the music publishers.  I would expect that most, if not all, of the music will be in the students' hands in the next two or three weeks.  Some will be avaialble on Saturday, November 22 at the rehearsal for pick up.  The rest of the music will be distributed at the students' lessons over the next few weeks.

Lesson Schedule for the week of Thanksgiving

In an effort to keep the lesson schedule balanced, Mr. Neujahr will be giving lessons at Riverview on Monday, November 24.  Thanksgiving Day would be the third Thursday since the year began when there were no lessons at Riverview.  Mr. Neujahr will not give lessons at his other schools that week.

Mr. Kramer's lessons will also be modified, as there is no school on Thanksgiving.  Those revisions will be posted soon, and Mr. Kramer will also notify his individual schools and students of any changes.

Update for November 8

Rehearsal on Saturday, November 8

After a week off, we will again have rehearsal this Saturday.  This is our sixth rehearsal as we prepare for our November 23rd concert.

We will be fitting the Cadet Band and Concert Winds students with Concert Vests during this Saturday's rehearsal.  Thanks to our Uniform Committee moms for helping with this important task!  In addition, our 7th and 8th grade students will be selecting solo music for the Solo and Ensemble Festival which will be held on Saturday, March 7 at Waupaca HS (See more information below).

Rehearsals leading up to our November concert will be on the following Saturdays:

November 8, 15, 22
November 23 - Fall Concert

Our Fall Concert will begin at 6:00 PM, and not 6:30 as it shows on our schedule.

Concert Notes for Sunday, November 23

Our concert on Sunday, November 23 will include performances by the FVL Schools Band Program's Cadet Band and the Concert Winds, as well as the Symphonic Band from Fox Valley Lutheran HS.  The concert will begin at 6:00 PM, and will take place in the FVL Auditorium.

Students will need to be at FVL by 5:15 PM on the day of the concert so they can receive their vests and have adequate time for group warm up before the concert begins.

7th and 8th Grade Solo Music

On Saturday November 8, the 7th and 8th grade band students will have the opportunity to browse and purchase music from the WSMA solo list.  The music will be on display in the FVL Commons. This music will be played on Saturday, March 7, at the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival which will take place at Waupaca High School.  Individual performance times will not be known until about two weeks in advance.  Mr. Kramer and Mr. Neujahr will help the students prepare their music during their weekly band lessons.

Many of the solos on the WSMA list are also included in SmartMusic!  You may want to consider purchasing a solo that is in SmartMusic, as Mr. Kramer and Mr. Neujahr will be able to use the program during the student's lesson to aid in the learning process.  For families that have SmartMusic at home (refer to our SmartMusic Post from the October 11 update), your students will have the ability to practice with the rehearsal tools that are available.  Tools include having the ability to slow down the tempo of the accompaniment, recording "takes" so the student can listen to what they sound like, and having SmartMusic tell them what was played correctly or incorrectly by using the Assessment feature.  SmartMusic can also be used as the Accompanist on the day of the solo festival, so it would eliminate the need for an actual pianist.

Most solos are priced in the $5-10 range.  Some solos, especially those contained in a book with several solo selections, will be priced higher.  The students will need an original, published piece of music for themselves and another for the adjudicator - this means they will need to purchase TWO COPIES OF THE SOLO, unless an additional adjudicator copy is included with the solo.  Photo-copied music is not allowed at WSMA solo festivals.  The students should bring cash to the rehearsal, or parents can pay with a check.  Music should be purchased on Saturday.  If you may have difficulty sending money with the student, please speak with Mr. Neujahr and arrangements can be made to pay later.  We will keep track of any IOU's.

Heid Music has graciously provided advance copies of several solos for our students to view.  Because there is only one copy of each of these solos, the students can select their solo and the music will be ordered through Heid Music.  So students will not actually take their music home with them this Saturday.

Mr. Neujahr will take care of ordering what is needed.  Students should pay for both copies right away, and when the music arrives it will be handed out either at the student's lesson or on the first available Saturday.

Concert Dress for the November 23 concert

So that you have adequate time to prepare, here is a reminder of what our students need to wear for our concert in November (Both Cadet Band and Concert Winds):

Ladies should wear black dress shoes, black socks or black hose, full length black pants (not faded), and a white button blouse with long sleeves. No tennis shoes, leggings, or capri style pants. Do not wear black skirts.

Gentlemen should wear black dress shoes, black socks, black belt, black pants (not faded), and a white dress shirt.

The Cadet Band members will wear a sweater vest for their performances. The vests will be handed out prior to and collected immediately following the concert.

Concert Winds members will receive a vest and bow tie before their performance.  Vests and bow ties will be handed out prior to and should be returned immediately after the concert.

Inclement Weather Procedures

As we get closer to potential inclement weather, remember to check the band's website for information regarding rehearsal cancellations.  If a rehearsal is canceled, a notice will always be put on the top of the homepage in bold red letters.

We have been blessed with excellent weather on Saturdays so far this year.  Since we have no Saturday rehearsals from Thanksgiving until after the New Year, the potential for nasty weather will be greater when we resume next semester.

Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin - A Wonderful Opportunity To Let Your Light Shine!

All 8th grade band members and their parents are invited to the Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin (LVW) Preview Day on Saturday, November 22, at FVL.  The event will begin at 1:00 PM, and will end with a pizza party (no charge!).   The entire event will be over by approximately 4:00.  It is our hope that all current 8th grade members can join us for this exciting preview event.

LVW is an activity offered through the FVL band program.  It is open to all 8th graders and all high school students and non-band students who are interested in color guard and our "front ensemble".

For those who are unfamiliar with our group, Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin is a competitive marching band made up of students from nine WELS high schools:

Fox Valley LHS - Appleton
Kettle Moraine LHS - Jackson
Manitowoc LHS -Manitowoc
Luther HS - Onalaska
Luther Preparatory School - Watertown
Northland LHS -Wausau
Shoreland LHS - Somers
Winnebago Lutheran Academy - Fond du Lac
Wisconsin Lutheran HS - Milwaukee

LVW is also open to ANY WELS student in grade 8 - 12, no matter where they live or what school they attend!  Therefore, public school students are also eligible, as long as they are members of a WELS congregation.

You can view a full-color, nine page LVW 2015 Membership Information Packet with an overview of our season on our website or access the information HERE.

LVW functions to provide a Christ-centered activity within which students can experience growth, both as an individual and as a member of a group.  Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin has always been one of the finest parade marching bands in the Midwest, and has displayed its excellence on the street with many award-winning performances from Calgary to Minnesota, from Wisconsin and Michigan all the way to Maine, Massachusetts and Georgia!  In the summer of 2010, LVW entered competitive field marching with great success.  This coming summer will undoubtedly bring the same excitement that our LVW family, both students and adults, were treated to for the past thirty-seven years.

Since our founding in 1978, LVW has performed or appeared in Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Wyoming, Alberta, and Ontario.  All our success, however, is governed by one basic philosophy: All that we do is done to the glory of God!

If you would like to learn more about the group, plan on joining us on November 22 for an exciting intro to what life is like in Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin! The day will include information for parents, with special emphasis on answering questions you may have about our group, rehearsal logistics, summer travel, cost, and so on.  Even if you are not sure if LVW is a possibility for this coming summer, please join us to find out what our group can offer your child at some point in their high school career. Students are to bring their woodwind/brass instrument to the preview day.  Percussion students are not required to bring their instruments.

You can also find out much more about Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin on our website at www.lutheranvanguard.org.  We also have a very informative page on Facebook under "Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin".

There is link to the RSVP for the LVW Preview Day on our website's homepage.  So that we can plan accurately for our pizza order, please RSVP by Monday, November 17.
